Short Story Short Review – The Whimsyless Tale Of Firstname Lastname

This short story immediately grabbed my attention because of the title. How could it fail to, frankly? That alone suggested that this was going to be right up my alley and thankfully it turned out to be that way. The whole premise is a simple concept, an outcast child who ends up attracting only other misfits into his life, who is then ostracized ever further from achieving a normal life through bullying primarily because of the unfortunate name he ended up with.

The Whimsyless Tale Of Firstname Lastname
By Lee Isserow

“The tale of a young man, who due to a tragically comic series of events ends up being known as ‘Firstname Lastname’.
He spends his life dreaming of whimsical adventures with quirky characters.
But alas, they always seem to elude him, to the bitter end. ”

Firstname Lastname had hoped that the unusual moniker would have led him down the path of epic adventures and while his final acts are pretty epic, they aren’t what he would have hoped for out of life. The short story is a straight-forward plot, from childhood on, nothing goes right for the character and he ends up in a dark place.

But there are cool touches of dark humour going off in this one that had me laughing on more than one occasion and I appreciate that. When the world is falling down around you, there’s nothing like a bit of dark humour to ease it all. That is what this short punch of a story delivers.

It flows well, it’s an easy, quick read and it is memorable enough to stick around in your head when you are done.
